Flat lap or cabbing machine?

Both can shape and polish stone. The important difference is how you move through the work: changing discs on one lap, or moving a stone across a row of installed wheels.

Choose a wheeled cabber when

Cabochons are the main job.

Multiple wheels stay installed in sequence, so you can move from shaping to polishing without stopping to exchange the main abrasive surface at every stage.

You want a disc system at an angle.

A slant cabber is still a flat-lap machine. The angled face improves visibility and supports seated work while preserving the compact, interchangeable-disc approach.

Before you buy

Four questions settle most of the decision.

  1. What will you make most often?Rounded cabochons, flat specimens, free-form shapes, or a mix?
  2. Will disc changes interrupt you?Occasional work tolerates them; repeated production makes the wheel sequence more valuable.
  3. Where will the machine live?Compare the complete footprint, weight, water handling, and storage—not only wheel diameter.
  4. What is the usable setup cost?Include abrasives, polishing supplies, coolant hardware, safety gear, and any cutting equipment you still need.
